Never a good idea to let an alternator charge a totally dead battery. The alt. probably overheated. Especially if you were just letting the car idle as it was charging. It pushed the alt to put out it's maximum charge and sustain it.

^^^^^what he said. a dead battery could of developed an internal draw which sucked the life out of your alt.

well it did not just siez, it still turns, and freely, but smoke just poored out of the thing, well i have electric fans and they were running to, kick on and off. is their any diff in an alt from a 88 car to a 92? i know the plugs are the same, but are the amps diff?

hopefully you hooked it up right. Did that one time (hooked up wrong) in my escort a long time ago and it burned like your while idling. With in about 2 mins of running there was white smoke and smelled like burnt electonics.

Your dead battery would have not fried your alt like that.

I think the Alt. was just at the end of its life.
The big plug melted correct?

Cant be hooked up wrong if it is the stock one.
