hey i have a question how come my alternator got fried? i put new brushes in it before i put it back in the car, my battery was dead so i jumped the car to start it, and i was letting it run to charge the batter and next thing i know i start smelling something burning and my alt goes up in smoke[:@] this has been a bad morning alredy. intake leak and now this.

It siezed right? Thats happened to my alternator and it melted my belt in half. Do you have alot of power robbing accessorize like a system or somethin?

Never a good idea to let an alternator charge a totally dead battery. The alt. probably overheated. Especially if you were just letting the car idle as it was charging. It pushed the alt to put out it's maximum charge and sustain it.

^^^^^what he said. a dead battery could of developed an internal draw which sucked the life out of your alt.

Was it the stock ALT.?

Mine fried the big plug many times.Almost caught my car on fire many times over 5 years.The I upgraded and never another problem.

well it did not just siez, it still turns, and freely, but smoke just poored out of the thing, well i have electric fans and they were running to, kick on and off. is their any diff in an alt from a 88 car to a 92? i know the plugs are the same, but are the amps diff?

hopefully you hooked it up right. Did that one time (hooked up wrong) in my escort a long time ago and it burned like your while idling. With in about 2 mins of running there was white smoke and smelled like burnt electonics.

Your dead battery would have not fried your alt like that.

I think the Alt. was just at the end of its life.
The big plug melted correct?

Cant be hooked up wrong if it is the stock one.

no nothing melted, it just like caught on fire on the inside i guess.
