Starting an Engine Build from stock 302 block
Hi, I am currently doing research on different parts set up for an engine build up from my 95 mustang gt. The engine is original with only 110,000 on it. I want you use the stock 302 block and that's about it really. Had car since 16, and now want to make my dream build come true!!! I have looked into getting new heads, new cam, 331 stroker set up, new headers, new mass air, new injectors and kenne bell flowzilla. I am open to all suggestions on what brands, size, and step that is recommended. Also, any additional parts that may be needed for this setup, especially the heads needed for the flowzilla?? This will be taking place in the spring/ summer next year, car used for car shows and weekends only, wanting 400+ hp, and budget of $10,000 with labor included. thank you for your opinions and comments.

From what I have heard the factory engine block literally can't take more than 500hp. It will try to rip itself in half. I have seen a few blocks split at the valley as well, but I don't know the power they were making.
Now for your budget, not gonna happen. You are looking at $4,000 in heads, cam and stroker. the Kenne Bell is another $2600, fuel system about $1000, $1000 for headers and matching mid pipe, and then you have to have the block machined, reassembled and tuned.
Now, you can drop the Kenne Bell and make over 300 to the wheels with a stroker, higher compression, and full bolt ons and that might get you in the budget. However, you will need to look at supporting mods like brakes, suspension, better clutch or converter, and a better transmission to hold the power. the T-5 manuals are not the strongest, I've seen a dude with a turbo V6 grenade one. the AODE is also not the strongest, but since autos are better at reducing drivetrain shock it will take longer to fail.

^That is a VERY good answer from 84CopperGT. I would also add two pieces of advice ... #1 take that 10,000 and just buy one pre-done. You will save so much time and money from buying somebody else's money pit. or #2. Look into a 351W motor. They are said to handle up to 750hp with no problems, unlike the 302 which caps out at 500hp. Most of the stuff from the 302 bolts right up the the 351W motor too. Just a suggestion. I have also heard of people just putting a supercharger on an all stock motor with decent results too.

Is that 400hp at the crank, or at the tires? Are you looking for a street car, with street manners, or more of a race car with a rough idle? Buying an assembled short block from one of the larger companies takes a lot of risk out of the equation. For 400hp, you don't need a s/c, though that's one easy way to get there. If that's 400 at the tires, at some point you'll be looking at transmissions as well.

Thank you all for the much needed advice. And yes 400ish and little over is most desirable for me for a street car to have fun and drive on weekends. Really wanted to stay with the stock 302 block simply bc its the original but I understand the gain in power and sustainability that comes with the 351W upgrade. The 331 stroker kit that is sold on american muscle for $961.99, what does this stroker kit intel? Is this correct stocker that i need to be looking into or something else is better, this one seems rather budget friendly but like i said, any suggestions are greatly appreciated, I will be getting the trans worked on before this engine build as well. With a supercharged added to stock block, what else is needed as for gauges or anything and what kind of power would be put out at the wheels? Thanks again!!!

You need to calculate the amount of compression you need for the amount of boost you are planning to run. you might be around 8.7 static compression with around 9 lbs of boost.
Afr 185 or trick flow 190 11r.
Something like this with the right piston volume.

the more boost you run, the less dynamic compression you can run for a given octane. i was giving a slightly conservative estimate because its not my engine, but the bottom lack of bottom end crested by the slightly low compression will be made up a bit by the fact that he can run a smallish cam. he can also run an msd designed for boosted engines that controls the timing so he can get max timing until the boost kicks in. i'm happy to give up a bit of bottom for monster top and early boost. keep in mind he is running an on demand system, not a centrifugal charger or turbo, its totally different.

I think you will have to grind some notches into the very bottoms of the cylinders to do a 331 stroker kit, I know you do on a 347......
I also don't think any kind of forced induction is a good idea on a stock block stroker motor.
