Default engine randomly reving itself

i just had my clutch replaced yesterday. today, i turn my car on and get out to see if i'm leaking oil(my front main seal is cracked, so i'm leaking pretty bad), and my engine starts reving itself. i get back in, and it is fluctuating between its norm of 600 rpm's and 1200. this lasted about 30 sec's. later tonight, i was at a stop light, clutch fully engaged, and the rpm's drop to 100, then mysteriously go up to 1000 before returning to the normal idle of 600. i have no idea what's going on and am worried to drive it. please help. thanks

well it hasn't been revving itself today, but still shaking vigorously when i start to take off with the new clutch. hope it's ok in a week or so when it's broken in.

weirdly enough, i'm having the same problem. just had a clutch installed, and now the weird revving at idle. the car also seems to lurch forward when in gear just coasting (no gas). when i give it gas, it's fine. any help would be great.

did it myself...the clutch seems fine. after we fired it up for the first time, it backfired and popped off a hose on the intake manifold. found that, fixed it, and now this. there's also a pretty big exhaust leak at the headers, but i didn't think that could cause this problem, but i plan on fixing that monday.

you take a voltage reading on it, should be 1 v

I just got threw with the exact same problem. It stays at 1700 or so for a while, and sometimes goes down. If you dont do anything it will stay there indefinately, and then the car will begin to studder. The problem is one of a couple things. If you've just installed any exhaust system partaining to headers , you have a vaccuum leak most likely attributed to the EGR tube. On the other hand, you could have a vaccuum leak regardless. Spray some water on the hoses and see if the idle changes. The most likely cause is your TPS. Engine thinks not enough air is coming so idle speeds up, and then when your in gear, the car will kind of pull itself. Replace it, the voltage should be between .94 and .99 Volts.

no, pep boys did it. they're gonna get an earful from me. i don't know what they did, but my car is also scraping going over speed bumps and threw dips. i looked underneath and something is hanging down, looks like a bracket holding the exhaust. i'm gonna bitch like no tomorrow...tomorrow when i have time
