supercharger...which one?
Hey i just got a 1988 Mustang LX 5.0, and i want to supercharge it, but there are so many different options. I want to know what will give me the most power with the least amount of maintaince. I was looking at the vortech supercharger, but im not sure yet. Can you help me decide?

I say it depends on what you have for a tranny. If you have a 5spd the centrifiguls are a good choice as these tend to bring on great boost in the upper rpm range of the engine. While a positive displacement blower like the Kenne Bell has instant boost right off idle and is great for the automatic equiped cars because the tranny has a tendancy to not alo the 5.0 mill to get up in the rpm range before it shifts to the next gear. Just as a testiment to the ability of a positive displacement blower I seen two identically equiped rag top stangs with auto trannys and blowers run. One had a vortec cintrifigul blower and the other a kenne bell positive displacement twin screw blower Yhe vortec car ran 13.5 and the kenne bell car ran 12.3 in the 1/4 mile. I did a little research on this to see why there was so much difference and found out the benne bell made 8 psi boost at 2000 rpm making big power and torque faster than the vortec even though it had the upper rpm hp advantage, the vortec was not in that power band as long as the KB is down low. After all on a street car, how long is the engine at 6000 rpm compared to 2000 to 5000 where the kenne bell is right in its power band. The other bennefit to the kenne bell is the twin screw is the way it compresses the air to make boost it does not heat the air as much so you need not run an intercooler. So if you have a street car with the normal gearing and tranny set ups for the street the KB would be a nice choice and if you have an all out efficient driveline that keeps the engine between 5000 to 6500 rpm between shifts the vortec, paxton type blowers would ultimately be quicker.

Either a paxten, vortec, Kenne bell would work great on that car. If you go Kenne Bell keep your gearing at 3.27 or 3.55 the 3.55 with a positive blower would be killer. A client I did a kenne bell install for with an auto tranny car will kick sideways bigtime at 30 mph with 3.55 when you floor the loud pedal and it is a serious ride on the street. Given you have the 5 spd they would all be good but for instant HP the Kenne bell is the ticket Ford placed a twin screw on the coveted GT that runs 205 mph for a reason and though it is not a kenne bell product it is the same principle.
