Default Rough idle--throw codes?

Sometimes the idle on my 88 GT feels a little rough. I have done a complete tuneup, yet it persists. No check engine light has come on. Will a code scan help me? Also, if one cylinder wasn't banging, would the check engine light come on?

Thanks for the reply, Stanglx. Yeah, I replaced them last week. Didn't make a difference though.

ohh yah dont forget wires are not the the only thing involved with it, plugs, distributor , coil could be a problem too.

Thanks for the replies. I just did a tune up on the car--plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timing adjust. Mustang95, did you say that there won't be any codes if the check engine light is on? That seems strange. Either way, my check engine light is not on. I was just wondering whether some codes would show on a reader that would indicate why my idle is rough. Thanks again.
