Default 289 power Q's

I have a 68 289 hipo motor in my 87 mustang gt. Put it in due to a broken rod and busted cylinder wall on my 308. The guy i bought the 289 from said that it had a different cam in it (came out his ford bronco II) but he doesn't remember anything about the cam. It has a ford motorsports intake and a holley 600 carb and mallory distributor/ignition. Anyone know of a horsepower estimate that i might have and what i can do to get the hp/tq up a bit? Any help appreciated. thanks

well for starters the cam is made for a truck, which mean less hp and more torque, next you are running way to many CFM's for that little 289.

BTW, you do not have a '68 289 hipo engine.

A hipo motor isn't going to have a bronco cam in it. Hipo motors and heads are setup for solid flat tappet cams and has stud mount heads. You probably have a regular 289 so my guess of hp at the wheels is 170-180 at most.

I do have a solid flat tappet cam and the heads are stud mount. Just so you know. And i did not say that it had a bronco cam. I said it came out of a bronco. Do not jump to conclusions thinking you know what i have. Read post carefully please.

That's what it sounds like to me. But, you also claim to have a '68 hipo 289 so I guess you're right.

They didnt make a hipo 289 in 68. And all the early cars have stud mount rockers. So that doesnt say nuch. How often do you set the lash? You could tighten it up and see if it picks up HP. If you dont have to adjust the lash, then you dont have a solid lifter cam.
