Engine Swap
Hey,I'm new to the Mustang world just got my first two weeks ago 1984 hatch with a v-6 and then a 1987 5.0 Saturday. my ? is how hard is it to put the drive train from the 87 in to the 84? I know something about cars but not super mechanic any imputwould be helpfull thanks.
Not sure why you would want to do that unless you just like the looks of the 84 better....
It is mostly time and labor intensive. My brother and I took an 87 roll-over and put the drive train into his old 82 GT. We swapped the entire electical system and fuel system along with the engine, tranny, and rear axle.
To avoid having an electrical nightmare heused the 87 dash/instument cluster. If you want to keep your interior original then you will have to work out the differances in the wireing. It is not easy I had that issue when I swapped a 1990 Ranger 2.3 dual plug into a 1979 Mustang coupe. Got everything except the tach working.
If you are wanting to use the 87'sEFI system you will want to put the fuel tank from it in your 84 as well. We also slavaged the fuel lines tank to engine made it a lot easier.
As far as the suspension the front will be an easy swap for the better brakes on the 87. The rear on the 87 should be a 8.8 swap it out too. the 7.5 rear on the 84 will work for a while but ......
As far as the quad-shocks set up we installed those on his 82 as well. There are several people on here who have dumped thiers they woud be able to tell you how to get by with out them better than I could.
Only other issue I can think of might be the K-member. The V8 and 4 bangers use the same k-member this I know for sure. The 6 I have been told is a different k member,I'm not sure if that only applies to the inline 200 or if it also includes the V6 as well. When we did the swap on my brothers car, becasue we where doing the suspension and engine we just unbolted the k-member with the engine/tranny and all still attached and lifted the body off of it on the 87 and did the same with the 82. Not an easy way to do it, but saved a lot of labor in the long run. Hope this helps, good luck and have fun!

BTW little side note I forgot to add.
At the time I had my 73 Mach 1 with a 351 clevland and c-6 swap from a 71. My brothers 82 wold kick my a$$ everytime! That is part of what really got me interested in Fox bodies.
