Heres an interesting depiction of how a car's engine works. This webpage is very informative. Definitely worth checking out. Not to mention that they have details on how almost every major part on your car works, from camshafts to differentials and clutches. Theres even a moving model. Cool stuff

not a bad diagram or explanation however, one must assume that it is the back side of the motor as no timing chain is pictured leaving it up to the viewer to decide weather or not it's magic that makes the cam and crank be syncronized[&:] must be a diagram for beginners[:@]

I'm actually not such a big fan of 'howstuffworks'. They usually get the general principle correct, but draw some unbelievably wrong conclusions.

you obviously weren't watching the diagrams. there isnt two ignition point in the 4 cycle. inhale, compress, ignite, exhale
