You don't need one to check or clear codes for your '91 On Board Diagnostics (it's pre-OBD-II)
You can do it w/o one

You can unhook the battery to clear the codes
If you want a scanner the Auto X-ray is excellent, though a cheaper and simpler one would pull the codes on this engine
