That is correct. So you need to know if the circuit you are now connecting the red wire to is live w/ the key on, hence the question about the test light.

But it works connected with yellow...

Will a volt meter do? i cant find my test.

put it to the right speaker..

its a dashboard light dimmer switch im having problems with it wount turn on without that hooked up and when it hooked up to yellow stays on and red dosent work.

when i put the voltmeter to yellow for - and red + it reads 0

Your not supposed to go across the yellow and the red, they are separate circuits.

Ok, normally after market stereos are wired like this

Speaker harness, self explanitory

Yellow, to a constant powered 12 volt sorce
Red, to a key activated powered source
Black, to a ground. Somethging solid under the dash
Then there will be a couple othe colors to trigger a power antenna and an amp.
Do you have instructions w/ the stereo?

Speaker harness Good.

yellow to constant.
red to red.
black grounded.
atenna nothin.
there is a daskboard one that the radio wont work unless hooked up to some power.
