gears for auto?
so ive read some on here before and most people wanna say 4.10's for an auto. but im driving about 50 miles of highway everyday if not more... what would be the best choice for gears? engine is mainly stock just a few bolt ons... and with the gears what rpms would you be at 70mph? right now i have 2.73's and im around 1,500 if not barely more than that at 70mph

3.73's are a good compromise for a daily driver that your looking for a little fun with. You probably wound see about 2000rpms at 70 - 75. I have 4.10's in mine but with the t5, and its a liitle geary, but still driveable and alot of fun.

Im runnin 4:10's in my AODEand I hate them.... I lost a lot of top end speed.... 65 m.ph Im around 3000 rpm
I wish I would have gone with 3:73's
Ive got out of hole speed, but it just about breaks your neck all the way into 3rd.... Another good add on with gears on an AODE is some tranny work, get a shift kit.... TransGo makes a good one.

for the first poster, i also drive 50 miles RT everyday, i still get 21 mpg w/ 4.10'sturning 3000 which is 80-85
your rpm savings will be 200-250 w/ 3.73's instead, at MOST 1/2 mpg and i doubt that, what you will lose is the torque needed to actually come out of the hole. stock aod and 3.73's will still bog, even slightly modded it will still bog and will actually go slower if you get a sticky tire, cuz it will bog too much, especially in a 'vert
trust me, i've had 2 aod cars, my '90 vert had 3.73 and 100 shot and i was able to squirt out of the hole on street tires.
also make sure you do in fact have 2.73's...i highly doubt you do in a 'vert
door tag "ax" code m=2.73, z=3.08 , e=3.27
if you bump from 3.27 to 3.73 you will hardly notice it
you won't be happy w/ 3.73's , i guarantee it

RE: gears for auto?
im in the same boat 1989 vert, with 2.73's
i decided on 4.10's becase i have 3 vehicles, and in the summer its going to be 70% riding the motorcycle, 25%the mustang and 5% the pickup.
my bike's got way lower "gears" ands gets 30mpg AT WORST hahahahaha so im going with it for the gas mileage, i average 35mpg with 120hp and 80ftlbs with a 685lb bike (including me on it)
so i get bad *** speed, and hybrid gas mileage

RE: gears for auto?
I've got a 91 AOD vert with 2.73's it's pretty doggy needless to say. In my 92 hatch AOD I've got 3.90's, I like them a lot. They're pretty good on the interstate. I can't remember what RPM I'm at when I'm doing 70-75 though, IIRC it's around 2500.

21mpg with 4.10s isnt bad, give it a shot

maybe higher rev's equals better mileage?
(i drive half highway and half city)
