Default timing questions-timing problems

hey guys, I tried to check my timing a while ago, before i knew about the spout connector. then put a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires on.

problem is when I tried to check the timing with the spout connector off the timing would bounce back and forth. How can I fix this? What could It be, slack in my timing chain?
If I sound retarded I'm sorry I'm 16 and dont know anything about ignition.
Thank you for any input possible

bouncing back in forth as in you can't really tell what it is at all? i had this problem once with an aftermarket cam and high volume oil pump.... ended up it was chewing up the cam gear and ruined the motor.... so mark the distributor on the block and pull it out and check the teeth on the dist. gear and the cam gear. they should look kinda thick and have a wear pattern on them... if they are sharp you're in trouble. hope this helps

if your timing is bouncing like that with your spout it, thats timing chain and gears.

did you check the timing with the car at full operating temp?

do you get a steady idle?

ya it took a while to get the car at a steady idle while not haveing the spout connector connected but i got it to idle at about 900 rpm, and I'm pritty sure the connection to the spark plug was good.
i'll check the gear on the dist soon and if that doesn't help then ill get a new timing chain and gears. any other possible small things it could have been?
thanks for all your help
