Default Slipping and Engine light

First off I have an automatic and it just recently started slipping and not going into gear upon startup, but goes away once it warms up. What could the problem be?

Next upon acceleration my check engine light goes on and off... WTF? (99.9% sure that its not a short)

Any help would be awesome. My local shop says if it is internbal tranny issues then im lookin at $500 to start out... F*** THAT! I can drop it and get it rebuilt for less.

Well my experience with Autos arent that extensive, but Ive had one car with one, it had 230k miles on it, and the tranny slipped constantly. My dad took it out and replaced the grears and clutches, as well as cleaning all ports and removing the "soft shift" spring. Cost about $200 all said and done and a weekend of time
