Stage 1 being the lightest, stage 3+ being more aggressive. And it's a known fact that heads aren't really cheap.

well, around that price range, i would consider buying a mild cam depending on what your tranny is, the ford racing E-Cam is a good mid-range cam, and is great for naturally aspirated or supercharged cars. so you really cant go wrong with it. but if you want more power, i suggest the B or F cams. as far as heads, ask around a motor shop and see what kind of work you can have done on your factory heads. i know alot of guys here in my home town who have redone their factory heads and have made tons of power. you could shave the face 10, 20, 30 thousands, port the runners, port the valves. even if you dont know what all that means, any machine shop worker should know all about it. or maybe you could look into upgrading the cam and throwing on a set of Rocker Arms and Valve Springs. just know that no matter what the upgrade is, it is an Upgrade! I've rebuilt my motor twice now using a set of trickflow twisted wedge heads out of the box and a B-Cam, and a set 1.6 rocker arms and i honestly couldnt be happier. but remember your tranny when buying a cam. if you have an automatic, the cam lift and duration play a big role in drivability, but for a 5-speed the sky is the limit.

For heads look at AFR or TFS for a good street performance head, or Dart as well. And don't whine about the price either, good heads aren't cheap. The difference between a good head and a bad head can be a lot of power.
