Repainting Black Moldings
My 89 is showing it's age on the black side moldings(rear bumber especially). I see that LMR has the factory correct exterior paint. What all do i have to do preparation wise? Do i have to sand the area first or just spray right over the existing paint? Some yellow spots are starting to show and i want to do this as a little afternoon project.

lightly sand them if they are still on the car, then prime them and then after primer is dry use a scotch brite pad to smooth it out so it feels smooth as can be then shoot it with correct color of paint
pretty much, but the first step is to wash the parts with a good cleaner soap like dawn(to stip wax and grease) then wipe them down with a wax and grease remover. then start the sanding and like said below light coats till its all uniform
sorry to step in but i was wondering how to reattach the moldings back to the side of my car.also theres the black rubber around the side window that says mustang on it and im wondering can i just sand it smooth?and on my door windows theres some black trim but the black rubber dried up and is chipping and peeling and metal is showing through what do i to fix it? sorry to jack the thread but i figured id ask some trim questions while everyones on the subject?

alright the side mouldings use double sided tape to attach you must clean all the old tape off before reapplying the new. the quarter windows are a common problem you have a choice either buy covers that glue on from the resto companies or try and save them by sanding and painting. imho id try sanding and painting them or buy a completely new window that doesnt have thee little ponys on them(read really expensive)
the belt line moulding(tops of the door near the window remove easily, open the door and at the top there is one screw holding it in place remove it and pull towards you it will slide back and then you can lift it off.
same choice here you can try and save it by sanding and painbting or buy new ones and again im chep id try saving them
So....clean and remove wax, sand with 1000 grit paper, clean again, prime, then apply paint until uniform? Can i get 1000 grip paper at home depot? Do i sand it wet or dry? The door moldings belt moldings i'm just going to buy new, i was referring to the side moldings all the way around the car.
Thanks.
Thanks.
