Default backfiring/missing?

Quick question. I have a '90 LX with longtubes, no cats, MAC catback. For a while now it misses/backfires usually in 2 and 3 gear. It doesn't do this every time but at least a couple times while i'm out driving. I took it to a local shop and the guy said it's the computer not reading correct because of the no cats. Is this true?

Just curious.

Take it to another shop he is an idiot. As long as you have o2 sensors it doesn't matter because on these cars they are before the cats anyways.

Cool, thanks. Any idea of what it could be? I have fresh spark plugs, plug wires, boots, everything. It's starting to **** me off lol.
