Mine did this and it was the starter relay, a quick fix is to gently but firmly hit it with a hammer/decent size wrench...Seriously... it's just not disengaging, or at least mine wasn't.

I did that once or twice and then I just replaced it.

+1 on tapping the solenoid to disengage the starter. The first solenoid I installed turned out to be defective, then i bought a more expensive one and the problem was solved.

i am on my 3rd celiniod because i returned the others.. and then went and got a more expensive one you could feel the difference in weight.. no help.. the car will crank and start just the starter wont disengage after i start it.. then i have to turn the car off and its still cranking off the battery till that dies or i hop out and pull the cable off the battery.. someone told me the one red wire going into the celinoid is what tells the starter when to engage and disengage.. if this isnt it i have no clue.. i finally got talked into buying a ford and its been the biggest mistake that ive made so far since ive had it.. the car is killing me sitting in the driveway.. i wanna go tear the streets up alittle with it

My 89 4 cyl did that. I got tired off it and sold the car.
I didn't have a title for it anyway. Then my cougar started doing it, I hooked up toggle and a push button start and solved that one. I loved that car lol
