an oil question
I've been putting high mileage oil in my car since I got it (over 100k)
I've been thinking about going with synthetic, but I can't get "high mileage" synthetic. Is that just because synthetic oil is so much better than conventional? I feel kinda dumb, but I don't know, and its better to feel dumb and ask then be dumb and do something that is not the best for my car. thanks |
does your car burn or leak any oil? if so don't go with synthetic. and if you do, you can't switch back to conventional. you should be good with a good synthetic tho versus your high mileage...
|
Just use conventional until you put in a different motor. There isn't a whole lot to gain from going to synthetic and your motor has had conventional in it for so long its not going to do much to help it anyway.

+1 agree with the ^^^^ ....you're not loosing much HP with a conventional oil
|
My wallet thanks you.

I use conventional oil in any engine. I have seen some engines all sludged up that had nothing but synthetic used in them. just changed your oil every 3000 miles and use good filter like a wix, napa sells them, they are their gold line.

mike you are so right about everything you have said. how does your engine know if your using conventional or syn? it doesnt so how can it hurt the engine? it cant. the only reason why a lot of people say not to use syn in a high mileage engine is because the syn will eat away at the sludge that is built up around the seals and gaskets that had been leaking which will make it leak again.
as for not making any more hp with syn over conventional that is BS. we did a dyno proven test at school with the same engine. first with conventional then with syn and the syn gained 15hp at the wheels from the conventional. i would have never believed it if i didnt see it first hand. |

you should of seen the chevy malibu I did an intake gasket on last week....talk about sludge in the motor, the filter was plugged up and when i LET THE DRAIN PLUG go, it looked like diareaha coming out and there was so much sludge you couldn't even see the tops of the lifters, funny thing was the kid said he was doing frequent oil changes, I asked him where and he said WAL-MART ....LOL GOTTA LOVE THE 14.95 LOF they sell:)

haha i did an oil change on a 3.0 ohv Taurus and it was so sludged up that in 10k miles the oil filter had maybe a couple drops of oil in it. it was still just as light as a brand new filter. the sludge blocked off the filter passageway and was just going through the filter bypass

wow...
so basicly the whole "synthetic oil will cause your car to leak" should be "If synthetic oil causes your car to leak, then you needed to fix your car." lol. I knew synthetic made better hp, I've read to many articles on that one to think otherwise. As for the marketing gimmick, your telling me, the freaking conventional high mileage stuff costs more than the synthetic stuff... Synthetic oil it is. |
one of the main reasons I run synthetic oil is due to the detergent and additive packages you can go longer between oil changes with out the ill effects of them breaking down and sludging up the motor, I have run amsoil in my wifes D\D since day 1 and it now has 180k on it , yeah so the cost of my oil change is 2 to 1 using synthetic vs conventional but I also go 7500 miles between changes where as if you followed the regimine of 3000 mile oil changes with conventional then the cost is no different cause in the 1 oil change of synthetic you'd have the cost of 2 conventional changes.......so in the end it all balances out and as far as I can tell the upper half of my wifes camary is spotless!!:)

i went almost 200k miles with conventional in my stang lol. i did how ever take the valve covers off shortly before it died to take a look at stuff and it looked like it was starting to sludge up and i was doing oil changes every 2000 miles

some cars just suck that way. like toyota they had a tsb out for replacing engines that had failed due to sludging while maintaining the normal oil change intervals. some areas of the engines were getting so hot they would kill the oil and make it sludge up and the engine would blow.

yes I said twenty thousand the oil I buy is good for 25000 but 20,000 is easier to keep track of. check out the delivery guy who went 1 million miles on his van motor and trans, changing the oil every 25k and trans fluid every 150k www.shadyninja.com/host/million-mile-van.pdf |

anyone know a good brand... a few extra ponys never hurt anyone... as for the "WILL CAUSE MORE LEAKS OHHHNOES!" that is complete utter bull$hit. my car use to leak half a quart of oil every 1500-2000miles. no joke, pissed me off. switched to mobil 1 full synthetic, and at 2000miles it was just barley showing that it was any lower then when i put the stuff in! i added MAYBE 1/4th a qt at 2500miles. im running it to 3000 for now, then depending on the color i MIGHT push it out to 5000 between changes. i beat on the car hard, so i dont really like the idea of waiting to 5k miles. my truck and my gf's car will get mobil 1 in there next oil change, and both of them will be stretched out to 5-7.5k miles between changes. |

It's not Amsoil that did that, you had soemthing else going on, too many possible varibles and unknowns not stated to make an accurate conclusion.......but last Ichecked the ratings for oil testing Amsoil was No 1 pennsoil/penzane syn was No 2 and from there the list went on but I do remember Mobil 1 was like 8 or 9th:)

for kicks have it sent in and tested, amsoil will test it for free you just pay postage, they can analize it and tell you if the oil is breaking down:)
