Default 96 explorer engine

i called prob 10 places today lookin for gt40 heads . one place said might have em junk yard for 150 for both and supose to let me know n morning . but i also found another place that had 2 whole engines out of 96 explorer . he wouldnt sell heads but said whole motor for 450 they have under 80,000 miles on em . i thought that was pretty good deal . if i can come up with money i think im gonna grab one and swap mine out . is there any difference or will that motor and bolt right up in my car with my wire harness and all . and how much more power u think that motor would be then mine .

Im researching this myself..I have a 97 Explorer motor with 60K in the garage. There are mods to be made to the intake I know to make it work and if the motor you get has GT40P heads, a couple of headers work and then there are some P headers from a couple of manufacturers. On P heads, there is an issue with spark plug location and fitment of reg. 302 headers. P heads are suppose to be a little better than the GT40's.

There are a couple of guys in another forum that have put explorer motors in their Fox bodies and have a couple of mods, good drag racing suspension and are running 11's/12's in the quarter mi.

Cam should be swapped they say along with new roller rockers and valve springs..

I am still researching, I am about to pull the motor from a 95 I just got this weekend with a bad motor.

That sounds like a good deal on a engine but try to see if they will take less. You will want to swap that cam out.

Definitely plus they may not accept it anyways since it is not an exploder motor.
