You need a new cable.

Is it hard to replace? this is a dumb question but it is the cable that connects directly into the back of the gauge cluster? i only ask bc i just replaced my gauges and fear i will have to pull them out again it was bouncing with the old gauges too. thanks mike

Mechanical? Take the cable out, pull it apart, clean it and oil it, and reassemble it. If it still bounces then it's the little plastic gears int he speedo itself, so you'll have to pull and disassemble the dash to get at it, but if you don't fix it and the gears get beat up, it'll bounce forever.

most of the time I have found it to be the speedo itself

Yeah, dirt and crud gets in the little gears and prevent them from turning smoothly, and mechanical speedos are VERY sensitive to extremely slight motion.

Mine bounces, the only cure I've found is to peg it. doesn't bounce when it can't go any farther lol.

this is true.i changed out my 85 mph for a 140 and the 140 bounces pretty good but the 85 never did.but the 140 looks better so i'll deal with it.

that's cause most of the 140 mph ones were 85 mph cores converted to 140 mph..probably didn't bother to check it out and test it when they converted it
