88 GT
looking at a 88 GT to purchase from private owner...have heard rumors that this is not a good year due to mass air problems...car in pretty fair shape....not looking to show/race/make a profit...just looking for a mustang that's fun to drive...any suggestions as to price, any known problems, etc...at first casual look, car appears to be ok bodywise...interior rough...asking 3600...states he has owned it 11 years
My 88 is fine. Just go over the car for rust. hatch, frame rails, underneath.. check for bondo. 3600 is alittle high for from what you say. I cant even sell my completely rust free bondo free straight 88 gt for 2500$.. Ill just keep it until the economy gets better
3600?? Are you kidding? I just saw one locally with 70K miles on it with mint original paint and interior go for that much. You can get ALOT of stang for that kind of money. If you want a decent project - one can be had for easily $1,500 or less.
88 and older (with the exception of it being a Cali car) are Speed Density, not Mass Air unless they've been converted. Nothing wrong with speed density, but mass air does make things alot easier for future modifications. Eventually, you will most likely move up to mass air and I would advise buying a 89-90 if I had to do it all over again myself.

my step father is a big ford man....he has had several mustangs from 85-92....he mostly restores 57 fords now...he has told me that this year is bad to go dead when turning left....he says to stay 1990 or above....i just really like this bodystyle
Turn right and die? what kind of crap is that??
My 88 has never done that in 165K miles.
Bone stock, the 88 was the fastest out of the box. The oem MAF is restrictive and hurt airflow over the 88. Stock is a 60mm TB and the stock MAF is only 55mm. The LX has lighter seats in 87/88 than the 89-up as well.
I converted my 88 to MAF awhile back. It ran great without it even with full exhaust and 3.55 gears.
I wouldn't be scared of an 88. I like tilt wheel and no airbag myself!!
I almost traded my 88 LX in for a new 89GT, but it was not cost worthy at the time.
If the car is in good shape and you can get the price down a bit, I would buy it.
