Diff housting vibration dampener

Diff housting vibration dampener
I have a general question about the vibration dampener that is bolted onto the bottom of my diff housing. It is from the factory and held on by two bolts.
Why is it there? I've owned several other types of vehicles with similar rear axle assemblies and none of them had this.
I know in general why it's there, but can anyone give any reasons that are more specific as to why Ford put it there (for example, high speed vibrations, wheel hop at launch etc.)?
Also, what was the availability of this item? Was it put onto 4 cyl. models or only V8s? Did it only come as part of the QuadraShok system or was it optional even over and above that?
Thanks.
