Default engine build questions

I have a 1968 Mustang coupe that I am rebuilding. I came here because of the engine I am building. I recently purchased a 302/5.0L from an 87 Mustang (E7TE). The guy I bought it from machined the block and reinstalled/balanced the crank/pistons/and connecting rods. I bought Edelbrock performer 60379 heads and I am looking at the ford racing e303 cam. I have a bag of roller lifters and pushrods that look to be in great shape from the guy that sold me the engine. I am seriously thinking about going carbuerated because of the cost and ease over EFI. I have never done anything more than bolt ons on my old 05 Mustang, I did install the supercharger but that is the most complex thing I ever did. Can anyone tell me if I am screwing up and/or recommend a good combo to finish this block off? I am looking for a decently fast 350-400hp car that is streetable with some decent low/mid range torque, up to 5500 rpms. Thanks for any help on this

ditch the e-cam idea = less than desirable to achieve your goal

I was also looking at the compcam magnum 280hr. Is that something you would recommend?

personally , I'd go for a head with a 2.02 valve instead of the 1.90 valve since your goal is 350 hp, not sure what pistons you have and the valve reliefs they have but if such is a concern Trick Flow makes a twisted wedge head, that'd be a real wise investment and if you're going carbed, here is a good set up, victor jr intake, pro systems carb, tfs fac 190 heads , custom cam to match combo and at least 1 3/4 lt's, and any and all other supporting mods, this combo will easily achieve your goal

alright, this is what I am thinking. I already have the heads so please don't tell me that I should have gone with 2.02 valve instead of the 1.90. I have the heads, block, hydraluic roller lifters, pushrods, and rotating assembly already.

stock 87 302 block, stock forged bottom end from the 87 block (machined and balanced), edelbrock 2121 performer intake manifold, holley 4160 4-barrel carb, and comp cams magnum 1.6 roller rocker arms. I really need help with a cam....I don't want to do any modifications with the block, rotating assembly or heads.

sorry to tell you what you needed to hear and not affirm what you wanted to hear, good luck, your current build won't hit your hp goal, but have fun either way.

www.flowtechinduction.com or www.camshaftinnovations.com for cam needs, either one can salvage your build and design the appropriate cam, but you will be changing valvesprings, a cam needs to have matched valve springs not some junk that says good to xxx lift, so you will be swapping those

ok, I know you guys are probably sick of me asking but here goes. I am not going with the e-cam because everybody here and elsewhere says it is a POS. I am looking at the COMP Cams 35-349-8, adv 264 int./270 exh, 0.512 int./0.512 exh. lift. I talked with a guy I work with that builds old mustangs and he said that looks decent but I wanted a second opinion. Will I be happer with that, I really don't know what to ask for in a custom grind. CAn I use the stock roller lifters or should I go ahead and spring for some new ones? I am going to upgrade the pushrods but I am holding off to get the measurements so I know which length to get. Does anyone know of a good matching set (cam, rocker arms, lifters, pushrods) and where to get them, just in case this idea is crap. I am lowering my hp goals, I just want reliable and something fun to drive. I don't care what it does at the track because I am not going to run it there. I am going to spend too much money on this to take the chance on slamming it in the wall or blowing the motor. It is pretty much going to be eye candy and I want it to have some go, not just show. It comes out of the body shop this week and I was going to post some pics if anybody is interested. I know it is a classic and not supposed to be posted here but I figured everybody loves a Mustang. Thanks for all your help in here.

With a custom cam, you don't have to ask for anything. You contact the guy who is going to grind it and tell him your combo, your goals and how you plan to use the car and he specs the cam and grinds it for you. In theory you can re-use those lifters but if your budget allows new ones would never hurt.
