Default 302 timing problems i think

i have a 95 mustang gt it had a stoke 5.0 in it. well i decided to put some port and polished heads on it so i tore it down and put the new heads on it and put it back together exactly like it was ecept for the smog control and the pump is stil there just unhooked the lines. and i went to finally fire it up and all it will do is turn over and backfire ALOT. so i checked my wires like ten times they are all right and and when i pulled the distibuter i marked it and the block so i knew which way it should go back in. and i marked all the wires acording to the way they were before. i have no idea whats not right but something is bad wrong some help please

when you restabbed the dizzy, are you certain it was on #1 on the COMPRESSION stroke ?

the first thing i would do is pull it again. then as you roll over the motor with the plugs out... put your finger over #1 , when air startrts to push out , then stop. manually roll it over to (0) then restab the dizzy so the #1 plug terminal is under the rotor. (mark the dizzy with the cap on if you need to)

if you are in fact correct, i would guess you incorrectly torqued your rockers.

did you reuse the stockers? did you go valve to valve? or try to do all in the "3 step process"

when you found zero lash... did you make sure you ONLY torqued to 20 ft-lbs ??? did your torque wrench go down that far or did you guess??? an inch-pounds torque wrench will be more accurate for torques that low

i can almost guarantee it's one of those 2, assuming you DID NOT screw up the firing order of the wires... like using non-HO firing order rather than 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

no i didnt think about it being on the comp. stroke and yeah they are stock rockers for now. my other question is do i need to do the rockers on the comp stroke as well.

and what do you mean manually roll it over to (0) then restab the dizzy so the #1 plug terminal is under the rotor. (mark the dizzy with the cap on if you need to)

please elaborate this is my first time timin one so im just learning. thanks for your help
