Default checking push rods and rocker arms

so i got my whole motor done the last thing i need is to set up my valve geometry. i see shim kits are cheap and so are push rods. how do i know what size push rod checker to start with. with 1.7 rr my total lift is .512, so its not a HUGE leap over stock. FR makes .30-.60 shims and that seems to be common. but what should the contact spot of the rod and arm look like?-thanks guys

Get an adjustable pushrod and measure the proper length. Set it at the stock length and roll the motor over to see where it rides on the valve stem and adjust from there. The ideal contact spot should be a thin line right on the center of the valve stem. Mark it with a sharpie before you crank the motor over and you'll see where it rides.

Depending on the heads you will prolly use the 6.25 stock length pushrods!

Definitely check them, I have Windsor Jr. heads which should have been fine with stock push rods but I needed 6.345.

Well apparently you don't think. Do your homework before you make stupid posts. You can get them either custom made to that length or Manley has 6.35. Talk to a machine shop or engine builder before you spew stupidity on the internet. http://www.manleyperformance.com/dl/2010/pushrods.pdf
