Default 3:73 Posi

I found a guy with mustang parts that me and my brother are going to go fishing thru tomorrow. Anyways, I've been wanting gears for my car for a while now, I like the 2:73's and all but I want more out of my car. This guy has the 3:73 ring and pinion and a posi differential he said he'd sell to me for $100. Problem is, i'm rather strapped for cash right now. But it's so tempting, I know its a good deal tho. Any input would help me with my decision alot. I'm going there in the early morning. Thanks in advance guys

i know this is late but for what it is worth if you are strapped for cash hold off as you will never know what yo are gonna get. everything always costs more than planned. as far as the gear as this question is disscussed a lot around here. it all depends on what you want. stock gears to 373 is a big jump, some guys will tell you different. i have had stock gears 4.11 and now have 373. i also do not dd my mustang and its a 5 speed. what tranny do you have? i think what i am trying to say is get the gear that is right for you and your driving weather it be 100 miles a day highway or 20 miles a week cruising? also drive your friends cars with diff gears if possible. hope this helped. mike

Ah I didn't know that. Learn something new everyday lol. It was a traction-Lock 8.8 with 3:73's. I decided to pass on it. I can get a better deal if I wait, I was just interested on this one for convenience. I have found complete Rearends on craigslist many times for around $150, so I decided it would be a smarter choice to just wait, find a rearend I want with the gears already installed and maybe jump on it.

is there anything wrong with your rearend? is it just the change in the gear ratio you are lookin for?

no my rears fine, I just want another rear to play with and have. The only thing wrong with my rear is the left axle seal or whatever its called leaks a little and that fact that 2:73's are in it lol. And yea I want new/different gears. I'm thinking I want 3:55's, I have heard good things about them and I think they fit what I want. I'd also like a traction-lock differential, I hate the one wheel spin, it's fine on the road, but sucks at the track.

yeah sounds like you are on the right track, you should no have a problem locating a decent rear end you could get it to where you want and then swap them. i think 3.55 are a wise choice thats what i would have if my car was my dd. if you are looking to build up a rearend to take a good amount of abuse there is a great article in one of the stang mags on a good combo that i did about a year ago. if you are interested let me know i can look it up. even if you do not follow the build by the article it may give you some ideas. mike
