Default AOD rebuild or replace?

My AOD doesnt have over drive, and i dont know if i should spend money to have it rebuild, or try rebuild it myself, or just get another AOD. What would be the most cost efficient way?

Ive never rebuild or taken apart the AOD so it would be a long time for me to even know what im getting into. I would love to hear some of your opinions on my situation.

There's ALOT of parts in that transmission. It wouldn't be outlandish if you've rebuilt a few transmissions before, but not if you've never cracked one open (and this is assuming you haven't). I have an AOD rebuild manual, but I've never attempted to rebuild one. I did some reading and it didn't seem like a nightmare persay, but there is ALOT to keep your eye on and make sure you get down exactly right.

Try it if you want, but remember - you still have to pay for the rebuild kit.. and if you do it wrong and run it, you're out $350 + you're still going to need a transmission.

it'd be in your best interest to pay someone to rebuild it or convert to a 5 spd for less, but more work

+1 on t5 swap

read here... http://www.westcoastmustangs.com/art...ap/t5swap.html

if you have to have an auto go here... http://www.lentechautomatics.com/aodhome.html

but you'll need more than just a rebuild kit. if you do it all yourself, it's gonna be $350 for the kit and another $500 for a new converter. also your sunshell is toast if od is not clamping and that can vary if you get new or used. they do NOT come in a rebuild kit.

all in all your probably looking at $1500-$1800 from a shop doing it. minimum of $1000 if you do it.... and it'll still only go 14's

going to a t5 will feel like adding 100 horsepower. and thats not an exaggeration

i have owned 2 aod cars and been there many times. other than lentech..... i wouldnt ever do another automatic car

ahh i see, well looks like lentech is a good product, i might have to start reading up on them. Do they take my old AOD for core charge?

I was wanting to keep it auto, because ive owned few 6 speed fbody's and im tired of shifting. Plus i love auto's because you can eat drink and drive. More consistent 1/4 mile time and easier to launch with better 60ft time.

i'd say yes they want your old one... but you could pick up a scrap one and give it to them.

i'll agree with all the diff's in trans convenience but that one. lol.... not even with a 100 mph tailwind and a huge converter is that gonna happen

Why do most guys running 9's and 8's have auto's then?

With a basically stock car and a stock AOD is what those guys are getting at. If you have the power to do so and a built AOD to go with it then yes you can hit 9's. Alot of them don't run AOD's either though. IF you do want to keep it an auto you have a few options if you want to spend the money.

Check out
