Exclamation floor pans interior surface

i pulled the carpet out of my 90 gt and found the floor in great condition( no rust). What i am wondering about is the non-metal material covering the tranny hump. Was this a heat shield or something applied by Ford when the car was built or would it have to be a aftermarket install. Its not metallic but as hard as the floor so i wouldn't think it was for sound dampening.

Mine has something like what your describing as well. My best guess would be it is for sound dampening.

My 93 does. Its some kind of tar-like-based sound deadener. I think it requires a torch to remove it. Probably weighs a ton also.

Yep mine had it.

I just used a putty knife and went to town scrapping the crap out. had to use a razorblade in some areas. Took forever!

Whether its 20 or 40 lbs, thats a lot of weight for you guys trying to make good times on the strip. I would think the newer cars would have a spray on type of dampener.

Nope, its cheaper to slap that stuff in a few spots than spray it. Its also faster to install on the assembly line. My 85 S10 had it, my 68 dodge had it, 81 C10, 94 jeep, 81 camaro and the list goes on.
