Default Vacuum Problem

After getting my vacuum gauge hooked up, I realized I have no vacuum showing. First off I don't even know if I put the vacuum hose in the right location. I put it between the PCV valve and manifold. Is this a problem?

There are two ports coming off both sides of the intake/TB, one on the front side of the car and one on the back and both are plugged. It was like this when I got it. Unplugging them doesn't effect how the engine runs.

With the gauge hose installed between the PCV and intake I can unplug from the PCV and there is no vacuum, but if I unplug from the intake and leave the hose on the PCV valve the gauge shows about 6-8 hg.

This leads me to believe there is vacuum between the PCV and intake but not enough for the gauge to show.

From what I've read elsewhere I am lead to believe the proper vacuum specs should be about 56+ hg.

I haven't heard any vacuum leaks plus the last owner has removed a canister or two of the vacuum system so I don't know what it should read at now anyhow.

Anyone else using a vacuum gauge? What is your normal idle vacuum and where do you have your hose installed?
