Default Brake Help

Hey guys i am interested in upgrading my breaks down the road and need some guidance.

It would be for a street/dd application. Just would like a shorter stopping distance.

I have read alot about the 'cobra' calipers and break set up.

Is it as simple as just buying the cobra calipers and bolting them in with my existing 1990 spindal?

What would be something good i can buy used? Currently i have a 4 lug set up and would like to keep it, but may switch to 5lug down the road with sn95 spinals. Are the breaks going to be interchangeable?

cobra brakes will not work with your 4 lug setup.

My suggestion would be a set of SN-95 spindles, 99+ GT PBR calipers and brackets, 99+ GT rotors, A-R-B 5-lug axle swap, ranger 10" drums, backing plates, hardware and shoes.

Ok so lets assume the 4 lug is gone. I get sn95 hubs and spindals and do all that fancy stuff. I plan on for a while keeping my drum disk brakes.

Will i need a bigger master cylinder?

Do these 99+ GT PBR calipers bolt right on?

What does "PBR" stand for?

Where can i get a set?

Very helpful. Before you mentioned this adder i never knew this was an option.

Still not sure about the mc or booster. Would like to keep the stock if i could safely.

Ok just to recap here, will only 11" rotors work on sn95 spindals?

Will the calipers line up perfectly with 11's?

Im trying to make a parts list..

Why 99+ GT over Cobra....

Cobra brakes aren't available from Ford anymore. The caliper brackets were NEVER available in the aftermarket, the design IMHO is poor. The caliper is only held on by a small pin, and they usually rattle. Cobra brakes will not fit behind a 15" wheel (if you should decide to run drag wheels).

Why GT Calipers:
Light, readily available, cheap. The 99+ GT calipers are double piston, just like the Cobra calipers. They fit a smaller rotor, which allows for a wider range of wheels that can fit the car. They are thinner (meaning the surface that sits behind the wheel face) which allows for easier wheel fitment. They will still lock up your tires in most situations.

Bottom line: If you are going to DD the car, drag or street, there is nothing wrong with saving some money and running the GT brakes.

Even if you decide to stay 4-lug, you have upgrade options that will greatly improve your braking performance.

Full fluid flush using Motorcraft DOT3
Stainless braided lines
Steel caliper bushings
SVO front calipers (bolt right on to your stock spindle & use stock rotors)
Good front pads, like Hawk HPS
Premium grade rear brake shoes

You can even go with a 4 lug rear disc conversion from SSBC, or even piece one together with a few google searches.

When choosing a brake upgrade for a fox, you basically have to decide what wheel you want to run first, then determine your intentions for the upgrade, & finally build off of that.
