Default starting problem

my 85 has a starting problem. when i go to start it i pump gas a bit then turn key. itll try to turn over but not and it takes more pumping gas and another turn of the key to turn over... its embarrassing at a store or like a dairy queen last night... i have been told i need to retard the timing a bit. i havnt had a carb car in years and am happy to get back into it but am rusty lol. it has msd dist. msd coil, ford racing plug wires, auto lite platnium plugs. at some point i want to switch over to e3plugs and msd wires again. are they any good worth the money? has newish starter and altenator brand new battery and brand new starter soloniod . what to do?

I had the same thing happen to me twice with my '79 ranchero with a 351. The first time it was the mechanical fuel pump failing, the second it was a pinhole leak in the fuel line between the pump and carb. Both times, the fuel would drain back slightly and it took too much cranking to bring the fuel pressure back up. If I still had it, I would've put a electric pump in it.

don't waste your money on e 3 plugs, get some autolites and make sure all tune up parts are in good condition.
