Default Gears

Does anyone know the best way to tell what gears are in the rear end? I have a 95 GT, was told by the dealer that i bought it from that is had 3.73's, didnt really believe him, but that didnt stop me from buying the car. Long story short, the speedo was off, actually it would get stuck and wouldn't read right, so I bought a red speedo drive gear, for the 3.73 gear setup, speedo was still sticking, so i bought a new (used) speedo, that fixed the sticking problem, but i noticed that it was still off, so i put the stock yellow drive gear back in, havent had it out on the highway yet to check it, but im pretty sure it will read correctly, comparing it to GPS speeds. Anyways, without pulling off the Diff Cover and counting teeth, is there a easier way to find out what gears are in it?

Jack the back tires off the ground, use stands to support the car. Mark the driveshaft with a paint marker or whatever, and mark the inside of the rear wheel. Tranny will need to be in neutral, slide underneath and note the mark on driveshaft, rotate it slowly while watching mark on wheel. Count how many revolutions the driveshaft makes to make the wheel turn one time. This will get you close. You should spin your driveshaft 3 3/4 times for one rotation of the wheel with 3:73's.

^^^Yup that's pretty much the universal method. Of course you could just pull the cover and look at the stamp on the end of the pinion.

Even with the gear kit, your speedo most likely will not be exact. It just gets it closer.

I'd pull the cover, check tooth count and then put new lube it. Make sure you use the proper type..........

So, just to keep everyone in the loop, i put the back on jackstands, marked both the driveshaft and the tire, spun the drive shaft and it went around 2&3/4 times. So it leads me to believe that the gears are totally stock. Actually leads me to beloeve that all of the upgrades and false, except for the offroad x-pipe amd flowmasters. I cant really fault the dealer, the sheet that he got from the auction listed all the upgrades. Looks like im gonna have to get a set of gears, and a few other things......

bummer , 2.73 gears are only good for sunday drives, and saving gas.

Look on the bright side , jump up to 3.73 and the car will feel completely different, and you will have a whole new appreciation for it.

If i did anything it would be 3.73's. I thought about 4.10's but that made no sense for my driving, really don't want to be racing a vert. Plus I drive an hour each way to work......
