Default Resonator function.. cutouts

Can anyone explain the purpose of the resonator in the exhaust... I was considering putting cutouts on and trying to figure out whether to delete it or not.. Any input from experience would be very helpful.. Thanks

Not sure what the resonator is for, other than to add weight and to enhance/cut down on sound. If it were me (this is not what I did, but this is what i'd do), I would either put the cutouts before the resonator, if they'll fit (i don't remember of the top of my head what the bottom of the car looks like) or i'd do a resonator delete and put the cutouts after it. I am not a mechanic, and this is of course based on very little knowledge. I just replaced the exhaust system entirely. MBRP Street 3" Catback... sounds awesome. In my opinion, at least. Pics and video after you install!

-Hope this helps,

Helmholtz resonators are used to cancel out a particular problematic frequency. usually an annoying drone. ever look under the hood of any average car and see these weird tubes and boxes hanging off of the intake duct? Those are also resonators. they get used because the dimensions and shape of the duct create a drone or "moan" at certain engine speeds, so using some fairly simple calculations they put a Helmholtz resonator at the correct point on the intake duct, and boom. the moan is gone (or at least significantly reduced.)

as far as the exhaust goes, if you're looking to make it louder, you'll probably be fine with ditching the resonator.

A '15 pulled up next to me in the lot the other day. Car sounded wicked awesome & mean. I assumed full exhaust system redo but nope. The gent had only removed the resonator- straight piped it back to the stock exhaust. Told me it cost him about $100 to have a local shop do it & also claimed no drone afterwards- find that kind of hard to believe but man oh man, did it sound righteous.

Does the S550 resonator not also serve as a crossover or H pipe now? I have thought about removing mine as well. I would think that I would have to fab a cross over when removing it.

Yes it also acts as a cross over as well. Just had my resonator removed and an h pipe made and put in. The exact sound I was looking for. I have already been asked twice which after market system I have. It definitely is a little louder and deeper.
