Default Rust-proofing...or not?

I'll be taking delivery of my 2011 GT in a couple weeks. I'll likely keep this car for a long time, so I want to protect my investment if the price makes sense.

Does anyone have any good advice on whether or not to get Ziebart (or another type) of rustproofing done? I live in the mid-atlantic and know that rust can be a problem...but I'm noticing that vehicles don't seem to rust-out like they used to. (I grew up in Pennsylvania and remember seeing many cars only 3-4 yrs old that had rust bubbles on the lower door seam and quarter panels...and by 8yrs old were totally rusted-out).

Basically, does this make sense on a new car, or is it a waste of money? And if it does make sense, what company/type would you recommend (Ziebart, etc.)?

Thanks!!!

Ooops...I meant to put the above question about rust-proofing in the general discussion forum but I can't figure out how to change/move it. Sorry...I'm new here.

I had my 05gt Krowned back in the day as S Ont is very humid etc. The car would/did not ever see any snow and only went out in the rain twice but I felt comfortable knowing I was protected. With my latest I am now in a semi-arid region and it will never see rain/snow so I have not had it sprayed. The other difference between the 05 and 09 is the 09 resides in a heated garage so all is good. To answer your question I would have rustproofing applied if you plan on driving it in the rain/snow/year round/daily driver etc

Good enough, really. Your car that you are specifically about IS a 5.0 Coyote GT, so that in itself should be okay, I think. At least to me it is.

A good coat of POR-15 on the undercarriage isn't a bad idea, especially on the rear axle.

i drove my 07 year round. rain, snow it didnt mater. when i took off what i could to trade it in, the undercarage was clean and in good shape. but they dont mix salt with the traction sand and the deicer around here like they do back east. i would have the undercarage sprayed with some type of undercoat and the inside of the doors sprayed with body cavity wax. dont forget to wash often in the winter too, letting that crap sit on there for to long just gives it a chance to do damage. good luck

All...thanks for your input. I think I'll check out the local rustproofing shop and see what they charge and what the warranty on it is.

Hope all have a Merry Christmas and Wonderful New Year!

Unless it's done RIGHT before ever seeing the street, I wouldn't waste my money. In some cases, rust proofing can do more damage than good by trapping contaminants and allowing them to eat away, sight unseen.

IMO, rust-proofing is a scam.

I agree with Nuke, I live in the North East and just a long as you wash the under-carriage (car wash) once in awhile you will be okay. Every spring I perform a highly detailed cleaning even pull off the rims and clean the backs of the rims....looks good / like new, but the most important thing I do is go under the car and spray WD40 on everything. I have been doing this on all my cars for the past 20 years and never had a problem.....this method is good if you like to tinker on your car....it takes about 20 minutes to crawl under and spray every nook and cranny. I bought a 86 GT a few years back and the bottom of the car was rusted to what I thought was beyond worth. I hosed down the entire bottom of the car with WD40 and a few days later the rust was gone and it look like it was almost new....I'm not kidding....it was amazing and still does. Anyways if rust proofing is a must I liked the Krown treatment (yearly)....it looks good and it's not a black tar-like substance. I never used this, but looks good. I attached the video from you-tube.

Whoa, WD-40? Really? I though I would have to shell out as well for an underbody rhino-lining at ziebart..But if this really works, I might just save my money and buy 5 cans of WD. Any specific places to spray/pay attention to when I do this? Thanks, this advice is pretty interesting!
