Default Tech Tips

Hi all,

I just ordered my 2012 GT yesterday, and it looks like I have to wait 2-3 months for it. I've wanted a mustang for a long time now, and this is going to be my first one. It also happens to be my first manual trans. daily driver. I've only driven stick once or twice in the past, and in a car with much less power than this. Do you guys have any tips on harnessing this beast? Should I expect the clutch to be very hard? Does it engage abruptly, or can I ease it in?

From wandering the threads, I've noticed that skip shift and wheel hop seem to be problematic. Are there any other problems I should be worried about?

I appreciate the help, and I apologize if I missed the answers to these questions in other threads.

Thanks!

Harness the power...?...it has plenty already Test drive one..and floor it in second gear. You'll crap your pants the first few times you do that. With traction control off, the back end will swing out in first, then again into second, spin in third, and chirp fourth

In my opinion, the manual transmission is a piece of junk; unpredictable and clunky as hell.

It's pretty easy to drive, but you will probably miss 5th and shift into 3rd on accident a few times.

The car has more than enough torque to start in 2nd, go from 1st to 3rd (daily driving), and...with skip shift, from 1st to 4th.

All in all, it's a fantastic car on the highway and city. Be careful though, it takes 0 effort to get this car to 100mph. You will often look down at the speedo and see yourself going 80+ mph...just cruising in 6th. This car wants to go fast.

Yeah, my 5.0 is one of the easiest manuals i've driven. Clutch is very light. Engagement might be a little on the abrupt side but its easy to modulate.

I learned stick on my dad's 1990 F-250. That was a pain.

Welcome to the board!

I love my '11 GT 5.0L Coyote so much, it has become my DD.
Mine is also a manual 6speed, The Getrag MT82 is one of those trannys that likes to be shifted fast in high RPMs.
For DD shifting, especially 1st through 3rd, you really need to let the clutch slip otherwise you get really jerky gear shifts.
First gear is the worst. But learning the shift point (which is about half way out on the clutch pedal), you will learn just where to ride the clutch for silky smooth shifts for DD purposes.
2nd gear is not as bad, but still requires some clutch riding.
3rd becomes a little more smooth.

Of course, when I say let the clutch slip, I mean slip it just enough for smooth engagements. Don't glaze the clutch!

I unfortunately have to concur. The clunkiness is the reason why I say you have to let the clutch slip otherwise you get lots of clunk and really jerky shifts.

JPC is making a T56 kit just for th Coyote GTs. I can't wait for that to come out. And this kit tranny can take much more crank HP than the stock MT82 can

Tremec has the magnum T56 out right now. I think I'll save up for that one if I decide to go for big power. I've said it before, this gt shifts alot like my 07 pony pack did. You just have to learn how it reacts to your input, play with it and see what works best for you.

Thanks for all the input! I really appreciate it. I was worried that I would embarrass myself trying to leave the dealership but it sounds like it won't be too difficult. It will probably take me a little while to get really comfortable with it, but I should be able to get around without stalling all over the place haha.

It's unfortunate the transmission isn't the best, but I probably won't be able to tell for a while since its my first manual car. At least there should be some other options down the road.

At this point, I'm just anxious to get the stang, lol. It's gonna be a long 2 months...

so i was wondering, why order a 12 and not search for an 11 that has what you want, are there new options on the 12 that dont come on the 11? just asking, youll love it once you get it. when i bought my 11 i only had to wait a few days just long enough to return my 07 almost back to stock, but when i was done with that the days that were left waiting were just dragging on.

I was just looking at that on several websites too!

Right now, aside from buying just the T56, you have have to custom fabricate a crossmember brace to mount the T56, get a clutch, and mod a driveshaft. The T56 is a little longer than the MT82.

I have not priced all these things, but the JPC kit is supposed to include all of these things together.
If the JPC kit as a whole is cheaper than purchasing all the other stuff separate, I'm definitely down for it!
