CAI QUESTION
So I just got the steeda CAI for my 2012 gt. Instructions say that installing the intake without a tune can cause searious damage to the engine. So my ? Is I guess is that really accurate? If it were u guys would u install it without the tune r wait until u got a tune for it?
You need a tune because the intake tube in the Steeda CAI is larger in diameter than the stock intake tube. Since you plug your original Mass Air Flow sensor, which is actually a flow velocity sensor, into the larger tube, the same air velocity will result in higher air flow. The ECU doesn't know this unless it's reprogrammed (tuned) and it will make the mixture too lean as a result.
The FRPP Pro-Cal tune should give you the same increase in low rpm performance as an aftermarket CAI and tune, so unless you really need a few extra horsepower at high rpm, I'd go with the Pro-Cal tune for just driving around. It does require a minimum of 91 octane fuel, though.

Be prepared for a lot more intake noise too w/the Steeda CAI. I was really surprised how much more noise was generated w/the open CAI intake honk. Ain't a bad thing but it is louder than stock.
And yes, get the Steeda tune to go along w/it first. I'm running a Steeda 91 tune and it works really well in concert w/the CAI.
Lastly, the Ford engineers strongly recommended a oil catch can install also to help prevent any oil blow-by or misting, which can cause issues w/lowering of octane values, resulting in pre-detonation. I had all 3 items- the CAI, Steeda tune and catch can ( as well as a set of GT500 mufflers) installed simultaneously and haven't had an issue- it all works great together.
Steeda rules!
