The biggest diffrence in size of subs is what frequency response do you want. The size of the sub will resinate at a certain frequency with less effor then other sizes. There is no rule for what size for the music, because each brand uses diffrent materials. The best thing to do is dermine your listening style. Figure out what frequence range you want, then check the specks on the brand of subs you want and see what the base frequency of each cone is. Alot of times this is listed so a rule is see what they are rated for and figure about in the middle. Changeing between a sealed or ported box will change the resonation frequency a great deal based on air space. 15's are mostly real slow deep bass, alot of which is below human hearing. 12's are typical low frequency bass like for base drum type frequencys, 10's will be more for snare drum type frequencys. The amount of subs you want depends on what spl you want. The two things that determine spl are stroke of the sub in and out, and the surface area of the woofer cone. Since you cant change the stroke, (well you can with the amount of power you give it), the easiest way to increase Sound Pressure Level is to add more subs.

Adding more sub's doesn't increase spl....ever see when the "bronco boom" truck has a load of 12's in it and only managed like 163-164?
