I have exactly the same question for exactly the same resons.
Can anyone help with the question of what else would fit, look stock, and have a CD player?

Do you not like the look of the ones you can buy, or what?

Just like "91LXStange", I prefere the stock look but would like to be able to play CD's.

Do you know what other ford radios from the early 90's look like the 5.0 litre mustang radio?

ford only uses a couple a wiring possabilities depending on if it is a regular deck or a premium for most vehicles after 1990. the best way to know what will plug into it is to pull the radio and look. Standard ford decks or non-premium decks will have two hrns's that are the same size and shape, but different colors(grey and black). Premium radios will have a grey rectangular hrs that is the same as the pwr hrns on the standard deck, as well as a smaller square hrns that goes to the amps. The best way to ensure a matching radio is to take the factory radio out of your car and compare the back of that deck, to the one you are looking at to make sure the hrns's are the same.

And acutally now that I think about it, there is a way to use a Standard radio in a premium sound car, if that makes sence. If you have premuim sound in your car, you can use either...........
