Impedance
Can someone explain to me (not an electrician) a few things about stereos. Just a few questions.
What is an ohm?
I understand that the stereo and the speakers need the same ohm number, but why?
How many ohms for the shaker 500?
Is there a way to match up an aftermarket stereo with the shaker 500 speakers so that I don't get a decrease in performance?
Basically I'm happy with the sound from the system, but I don't like the radio unit. It's too slow with the changer...I have the skipping problem, and I'd like to hook up my iPod. I know that I can get it replaced under warranty, but I like the Alpine systems that allow for iPod control through the actual stereo. Is there a viable way to do this?
I understand some of the questions are basic, but I'm just starting out with this stuff, and don't want to go into the audio store and get bamboozled into buying a whole new system if I don't have to.
Thanks fellas (and fellettes).

ill tell ya right now i work with car audio systemas and with ANY premium sound ystem it is a pain in the *** to just get new speaker or just a new deck or add something onn tto it. mostly due to the factory amps*** but your best bet is to change everything or nothing
ohms are esentially resistance amps are 4 ohms if you know how to wire you can get it to see 2 ohms and produce more power ect ect..
as for the alpine and i pod there great decks i sell em every day BUT like a said ur best bet is to replace deck and speakers

So if I take out the shaker and put in an aftermarket system (sony, alpine) any of the $200-300 range stereos what's the issue? I don't think I understand why the aftermarket decks aren't compatible with the stock speakers.

I haven't had alot of interactions with the Shaker systems, but the Mach system use a goofy adapter and if your new head unit has front and rear rca outputs you can easily connect a new deck to your factory amps and speakers. Talk to the 05+ guys in here that you see replaced their stereo.
MOst of the time its cause ur factory radio with premium systems doesnt power speakers like the aftermarket will, the stock speakers are independantly amped all that means is when u change decks you soulld bypass those amps
