Some ideas for the 67?
Not going in anytime soon, but I've been thinking about a new complete system for the 67. Knowing little about stereos, subs, amps, I figured I'd turn to you guys to guide me in the right direction. Sorry for the long post - admittedly I have little experience in this area.
Here's some info on the 67:
Front speaker areas:
- in the center of the dash (pointing straight up to windshield) there's room fortwo 3-1/2" speakers (this is the crappy stock location)
- in the kick panels (down by your feet) I can fit up to 6-1/2" shallow speakers mounted on plastic kick-panel covers
- would also like to consider small remote satellite tweeters mounted into the door panels or dash area
Rear Speaker areas:
- room for two 6x9 speakers way in the back, pointing straight at my head
Trunk:
- room for one single10" sub, mounted in sealed box, wedged into left-rear corner of trunk. There's a pre-made sealed box with the PERFECT dimensions for this tight spot on ebay and it has an enclosure volume of 0.85 cubic feet.
Assume budget of $1,000 for EVERYTHING from head unit, speakers, sub, amp(s), wiring, etc. I'll do the install myself.
SQ is favored over SPL. Listen mostly to all kinds of rock, not rap. Must be SIRIUS ready (guessing I'll need that SIRIUS underdash box as well, since I now only have the portable one that I can take with me to use in the car and the house).
Need ideas for how to proceed - i.e. (1) do I ditch the 3-1/2" speakers in the dash and just use the kick-panel speakers? and maybe remote satellite tweeters? (2) do I use all front speaker locations, ditch the 6x9's in back and allow the holes (nicely covered of course) to allow the sub's base to penetrate the interior better? (3) do I use all possible speaker spots to have a system with 6 front speakers (2 in dash, 2 in kickpanels, and 2 small tweeters), 2 6x9s in the rear, and also the 10" sub? (4) other more intelligent suggestions cause I'm a newbie in this area?
Thanks for all of your suggestions, and if you need more info, please let me know.
Here's a better pic of the car than the one in the sig:

My friend had a similar year and he put two smaller subs on the rear shelf where the speakers usuallly go and he put the rear speakers on the rear side panels by the armrests somehow. It looked pretty nice and sounded pretty decent too. I'm not sure if it is optimum SQ though, someone else will have to answer. Just an idea

That being said, I agree with the front and center locations for speakers, bad. No enclosed air space, let alone no separation on either side of car, sounds lousy. As far as rear speakers, a side note. Do you plan to put holes into the drop down panel that leads to trunk? Please say no. If you want to put them there, is a good choice sonically speaking, but make a replacement panel. The original is VERY hard to find and not many DON'T have holes for such speakers.
I don't know the config of your car at all inside, other than that mentioned. But the kick panel is also a bad idea, sorry, as the air space issue comes up again. I think maybe some low power tweets up on dash or high on door and the 6x9's in back with sub should be fine.
Back in the day, stereos were not high priority for cars. AM was the hopin' choice for most

Thanks Jazzer for the compliment! Nice ride yourself!
I wish the previous owner had taken your advice on the rear panel, as he already cut out holes for the 6x9s back there. My POS existing HU is currently powering those 6x9s, but if a better set-up can be made with front comps maybe, then I'd be willing to ditch them. I'd make faux 6x9 speaker covers to cover the existing holes, which would then act as a passive system to allow the sub's sound to greater penetrate the interior of the car. The 6x9's are placed well on that panel though, as they emit sound (although, not great SQ right now) directly to the listener. The angle of that rear panel and the placement of the 6x9s could not be any better to provide a direct shot of sound to the listeners up front.

Thank youas well
Sorry to hear holes already there. Since they are, if you have somewhere other than kick panels to place speakers, possibly doors. Again, hate to see the door panels get holes, but it is your car and will not pass judgement on whatever you decide. If you can get some speakers in the doors, I like the idea of fake covers to let bass into cabin. I had an '85 GT and speakers in doors were too low relative to my ears, so rear fill was a must. I put some tweets in upper corners of dash (no air space needed for them) so had nice stereo symbols was surrounded by audio (including four 10's)pounded hard and sounded fantastic. You can also put some spacers for door speakers to allow for a deeper cone than the door would otherwise allow.
Let us know how you decide to proceed.

EDIT: BTW, it is not really my car, just found pic on the net. I drive an '76 Datsun pu [&o]

I would not run rear full range speakers in anything. Most people that are knowledgeable about car audio will tell you the same thing.
My 65 will have the following.
HU in the glovebox
6.5 comps in the kicks with tweets mounted towards the drivers side seat.
2-3 6.5' or 8'subs in acustomparcel tray build by me toallow each sub around .2-.3 ft^3 airspace.
A few hundred watts and it will sound very nice.
Since you already have theholes in the back. Cover them with grills and allow bass into the cabin.
I will also keep theAM radio function for posterityssake.
