Default Good vs. Awesome

Dumb question...assuming you could afford appropriate speakers, what would be the real difference between a good and an awesome amp? Is it really perceptible? I don't have any good audio shops around me to find an "awesome" amp, so I can't conduct this test myself.

Is the difference more or less perceptible for driving subs?

Thanks. If this is a really dumb question, maybe somebody can tell me what a good figure of merit could be. I suppose the question I ask is a description of the magnitude of diminishing returns.

I'd run McIntosh with an endless budget but zapco is pretty nice too. The difference would be a very very slight most likely inaudible difference in SQ.

Some true audiophilesclaim they can hear the difference between class A/B and class D amps for subs. I am yet conviced and I can hear the difference between and 6.5 and 6x9.

If I had the choice and could get the Zapco for the same price as the eD, I would probably go for the Zapco, only because I knew I had a retail $1000 amp for $275, if it was anymore than$275 like the eDthough, I'd go eD.
