It's always good to have a custom box made to get the most bass out of your subs. Hatches are also great for subs because the sound can reflect off the rear window and into the cabin. Back seats would not only be a not so great idea, I dont even think there's room to stick stuff under them lol. As for speakers... it's always nice to get a component setup up front. A classmate of mine has an '89 hatch and he put Kicker coaxials all around and they sound pretty damn good. Just depends on whatever speaker brand you want to get. A lot of them out there are equally great. Same with subs. I've heard equally awesome subs so I don't know what the competition is between them. As far as a head unit, the same thing applies. A lot of them are great. Just find one that has the features you would like on a head unit... like... "Do I want bluetooth?" "Do I want a USB port to plug in a thumb drive for music?" "Do I want a head unit with a hard drive?" "Do I want satellite radio compatibility?" "Do I want navigation?" "Do I want the ability to play DVDs?" etc. etc. Lots of brands are good... I have a 2005 model head unit from Pioneer that still works great. Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion, Eclipse, etc.

Can you even do that? if you have room under your back seats then I wanna know what you're doin...as far as I know my floor ends there....

in all seriousness the budget system for 400$ would be sweet for that 91...I actually might do that same thing.

If you want to spend a little more, every hundred dollars gets you a pretty nice upgrade...
