Default New Alpine system arriving today

I'm doing the install myself with the included wiring harness from Crutchfield. I've already removed the Shaker 1000 in preparation for putting the new one in this evening.

Is there anything I should be warned about/aware of before attempting this ordeal? (Be advised that I hate dealing with electronics in cars)

I ended up with this system and the free ipod adapter it came with.

Edit: One thing I just thought of for instance is the autodimming...where would I look to get that to function properly or is that sort of thing covered in the Crutchfield directions?

Okay, two problems with the install.

1: The autodimming doesn't work. I used the autodim lead from the metra harness and it doesn't do a damn thing.

2: I get a pop everytime I turn the stereo on. I've had someone suggest better separating the power/ignition lead from the rest of the wiring bundle.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
