Default Problem with 00 stereo

Ok, so when I'm listening to the radio, doesn't matter if it is CD or radio stations...if I try to turn the volume up to halfway or higher, the volume just gets really low all the sudden. I have to turn the volume down, then turn the radio off, and then on again. Then I can try going higher. But it never fails, halfway...and it'll drop again. Any ideas what this could be and how to fix it?

Umm, I dunno, is there an easy way to tell? I don't think it is one of those Mach stereos or anything, everything looks pretty basic.

Ttocs is the master of the OEM stuff, but it sounds like a problem I used to have on one of my bass guitars. For me it was basically a bad pot on at the **** base.

Any ideas? I have saturday off and I'll be spending the day working on my car anyway....so I'll have some time to spend on the stereo. I just don't know where to begin. Is it time to save up for a replacement?
