I have a 2000 GT with Mach 460 in it. I don't like the stereo unit itself as well as the sound (would like more bass), so...

Don't know much about stereos so I need some advice regarding the direction I want to take

I don't really need the top of the line stuff, I just want my system to be somewhat decent... (please don't tell me Mach 460 is decent, I don't like it)

1) Looking to replace the head unit with an Alpine (?.. just like the way they look, plus haven't heard anything but good about them) stereo (in ~$300 range) so it can play MP3's and show track names (yeah, I'm weird like that, LOL, I care about such things)

2) Not satisfied w/stock speakers' bass, so I'm thinking to get an easy (?) solution and put a 10" Bazooka sub into the trunk... no need for 2x12" (don't really want all my neighbors to dance with me)... and have the Bazooka "handle" the bass output. I used to have this setup in my previous car (I still kept the Bazooka after I sold it).

As you can tell, I'm not into the coolest-newest-greatest setups... what I described should produce a satisfying output for me. However, Idon't know how easy it would be to get this done on top of the Mach 460.

Any comments would be appreciated... assuming you know more than I do

 

personally i agree with you that the mach 460 doesn't have enough bass, thats why i have 2 10s. however i kept the stock headunit and the system sounds awesome now, i think the 460 has decent mid and high range levels. i wouldn't use the bazooka subs, but you can add subs with a line output converter. if the system still doesn't satisfy you then you can replace the rest of the stock speakers. im going to get a ipod to play all my mp3's with for like 20 bux you can get a tuner to make it work with any radio.

but if you set on changing out the head unit then go for it, this was justa suggestion and atleast a few other members have done the same.

 

We used a quick set up for my Sony head unit. The head unit still powers the tweeters, but the deck I have has two sub pre outs. We ran a set to the right and left amp so I could still control right and left. It took us about an hour and half, most of the time was spent looking for a third amp not knowing that the 460 has one in the head unit.
