help installing an alpine ida-x001 on a 91 gt
Hey guys,
I just bought a new stereo, its the Alpine Ida-X001 and I'm having trouble with the wiring. My car used to have a kenwood head unit, which got stolen. The only thing taken was the head unit, everything else was left intact even the wiring. Well, my problem is that on the wiring harness that comes with the head unit, I have to attach another wiring harness so that i don't cut off the stock wiring harness that comes in the car( so basically I have an adapter that will adapt the new wiring harness that comes with the head unit to another wiring harness that will fit the after market wiring harness thats already on my car). I just have a bunch of left over wires and I have no clue if I"m gonna be missing things or if thats ok. the manual talks about grounds and wires going dirrectly to the battery's possitive and negative posts. How the hell do I do this, isn't all of that taken care of by the wiring that goes from the amp to the battery?
I was hoping I could do it myself, should I just pay an audioshop to do it for me or?

If you have the wiring diagram for your car, and the one that came with the head unit, then it should be no problem. Use the power and ground wires on your harness. The diagrams in manuals just show them going directly to the battery and ground. I'm not familiar with 91 wiring, but you shouldn't have too many extra wires. Generally on a harness, there should be 8 speaker wires, 12v power, ground, 12v ignition, amp turnon lead, illumination(dimmer), illumination ground, power antenna. Illumination isn't needed because that's the dimmer controls rather than ACTUAL illumination. Amp turnon lead is what signals your amp(s) to turn on/off. So it isn't needed if you aren't using any.
I don't know about 91's, but I know mach sound systems are amplified, so you may need to run new wires from your head unit directly to the speakers bypassing the amps when you install a new head unit.
Some harnesses will also have some wires like phone mutes, multiple amp turnons, wires for cd changers and whatnot. It depends.
All you basically need to do is match the wires on the package of your harness with the ones in your head unit's manual. (not the color but the wire's description)

we will need to know if you have a factory amp in your car before we start. Look directly below the radio and what do you see?
Even in the mach system there is no reason to run wires. You can either wire into it or easily go around it if you know how. Welcome to the forum.
