Best place to ground Amps..
So I installed an entry level system in the back of my car.
Blaupunkt head, 700 watt amp, and a 10" sub in the back. I ran all the power down the driver side of the car, and all the "sound" cables down the passenger. Mounted the amp on the back of the back seats. Ran a wire for the sub.
When I fire this baby up, I get an extreme engine whine that increases with the rpm's. If you pull the RCA's the whine goes away.
I read through the forum and it looks like everybody is saying bad ground is causing the buzz. I thought I had a pretty good ground, but I was wondering where is the best place to gound out the amp?

You shouldn't run the power wire down the same side as your RCA's.
Ground doesn't matter where it's at, as long as it's bare metal and it's very securley mountedyou'll be fine.
Dont quote me, it could be either one of those problems, it may even be something else but those are the 2 biggest things that cause excessive noise. But you should do both steps, run your RCA's down the other side and double check and make sure you have a solid ground.

read it again, they are seperated....
What head unit are you using? Try disconnecting the rca's behind the radio or source and see if the noise stops, we need to find out if noise is comming in at the deck or at the cable.

I never thought to look at the head unit.
If the sound is coming from the head unit, is this something as simple as re-grounding the head unit, or are we talking needing to buy a new HU?
I wired the HU in with a wiring harness, so the power and ground I just picked up from the factory harness.
The HU is about a year old, and it's a Blaupunt Monte Carlo. It was in great shape and performed well when I took it out of my last Explorer.

it could be comming in from a number of spots. You should not have replace anything more then maybe an RCA cable. 98% of the time noise problems are install related not equipment related.
Also, what year is your car? Did it have a premium sound system in it stock?

Okay. So I pulled the headunit this weekend. As soon as you disconnect the RCA's from the back of the HU, the noise goes away. I ran a new ground to the HU and nothing.
Don't they sell inline filters or something like that at Radioshack? Should I head towards my local Radioshack and put something on the power feed to the HU?
Thanks again

those filters are worthless, we can fix it.......
You never did say where the amp is grounded to? We could have a ground loop. When you had the deck out and the rca's disconnected, did you try grounding the cables(thats right, just touching them to ground or even just lick you finger and touch the top of the cable and the shield). It sounds funny but this is important.... While it is out it is also really helpfull to run a temp rca cable from your deck to the amp and see if the noise stops. Don't go under the carpet or seats, if it is long enough even just open the door and pass it back.
