Default noob to speakers

hey guys i have a 1990 mustang, i am in school and taking a manufacturing class, so i wanna build a speaker box for the hatchback, i wanna get a 12' , plus 9x6' speakers (i think), and i wanna build a spot for the amp, but i really am new to the car audio world, so any suggestion, tips, whatever u guys could post would help. my one big question is what is the purpose of the amp? and does quality in it matter, btw i think i want the box to reach from the right all the way to the left, but i dont know the distance it is yet... so any help would be great
-thanks

Default RE: noob to speakers

i think in my vert its 38" end to end.
amp quality is HUGE. some companies do not offerMOSFET cooling technology, meaning in 4 hours your amp literally melts. clarity and true wattage is huge in amp differences. anything from walmart, bestbuy etc is garbage. woofersetc.com is a pretty good site for all needs. for a 90 fox you need 6x8 speakers in the back and 6.5 round for the doors. i suggest imagedynamics found on woofersetc.com. you will want to use 3/4" MDF board found in large sheets at homedepot menards etc. an amp takes current from the cd deck and amplifies that current, which subwoofers and high end speakers need to work properly.
