Please help with Avic-D3 install
Ok so i looked at and read the posted sticky on the Avic-D3 install and found it terrible. Now there are like 4 pics with 5 sentences on how to install stuff. I had a pain in the neck time getting everything working and then stuff incomplete.
Now, first off, i would defintly love to improve that guide for anyone else that ever wants to install a aftermarket unit.
First part of things i need to know, i unhooked my shaker 500 headunit. The antenna end for receiving AM/FM stations had a unusual plug on the end of it. It does not fit the Avic-D3 stock the way it unhooks, im betting that it needs some adapter as i believe my gf's gm truck needed one. Not that there much but at present i do not have it, nor was it addressed in the guide. I need to know if someone with a 2008 GT has looked at there antenna plug, and if it is just a different one then previous years. If so i will locate the part for this and make a updated guide that addresses it.
Next, i know there was a different write up of a aftermarket headunit install that featured the D3 that was not sticked and it addressed how to hook up the speedometer feature thing on the D3 to the PCM i believe. The sticked one does not feature this and i searched around and couldn't find that other guide.I feel this also needs to be included in a sticked guide.
Also, this may just be me being stupid, but i feel it should be pointed out as to avoid wasted time. The metra dash kit for it goes together, and then you must screw it to the side of the D3, well one part of the front of the dash kit, the top or bottom however it is rotated has a lip that pokes out farther then the other. IE the top is fatter then the bottom. Well if you install it the wrong way then the ac controls and other controls wont fit back over it properly, something that i learned. I would need to go check to see and take pictures of which way goes where, because it's just aggervating to put all the screws back in then that part doesn't want to go on right.
Next the tutorial also stated that the right part of the AC controls he couldn't get off, and that he just left it on, well i'm not sure if the 08's controls are shorter or what, but when i tried just leaving them on, the whole panel wouldn't really move far enough away to fit a double din headunit in there, in a easy way. You would have to do some major craming to get stuff in there and it would be hard to navigate around. I figuredout how to unhook the other part to make it much easier to get the headunit in there.
Lastly, the tutorial states you need to clip the back tabs off the metra dash kit, though you have to clip the tabs very very far down or else it will not fit. You have to clip them all the way down until there pretty much level with the rest of the plastic. I kept trying to figure out how to get them down far enough to get the dash kit to fit. I finally found the best tool, a pair of like giant wire cutters. I would need to take a picture of them but they defintly work perfectly for clipping the tabs off. You can clip them all off perfectly within seconds.
I just feel that the D3 guide was incomplete, as there were few pictures of where stuff should go, and not much on how stuff should be installed. There are also a few other things that could be addressed.
If anyone cares to help me out i would love to make a updated version of this guide. I need to mainly know if a antenna adapter is needed for sure or how to use the antenna for AM/FM radio, and if so what part number and where to obtain, i know i bought one for a truck that was a GM from bestbuy for like $3, so they may have them. Also i need to know where that guide is for how to hook up the PCM wire to show your speed and other stuff on the D3.
I can defintly get more pictures that will help out as well. So let's get that guide updated.
Edit: I also believe that the guide on how to splice into the PCM wire told how to install different backgrounds on the D3, i believe you had to burn them onto a CD then insert it and copy it over. I'm not 100% sure and would like to add that into the guide as well.

I have not done this but have done a lot of reading on it and was told that 07 and 08 stangs must get an adapter for the radio I think you can get them at radioshack for cheap. The guide is right here:

The antenna adapt that you need is a 40-CR10 its for dodges starting in 02 but GM, Ford, and Dodge now use it. Best Buy sells it for $12.99
You dont have to put a 5v regulator in like the write up suggests, you can use a 1k ohm resistor and be just fine. It will get rid of amp turn on pop.
The Speed wire is not nessecary on the D3, call pioneer directly at 1800PIONEER and they will tell you that the Unit is 99% accurate with it hooked up and 98% without it being hooked up. All the funtions of the unit work fine without it.

If you do hook up the VSS, a good location to use to get through the firewall is the antenna grommet on the passenger side. The antenna wire is orange. I poked through it with the wire taped to a clothes hanger. You don't have to go far.
Also, remove the battery and holder. It makes it a lot easier to work in that area.
