alright i got a new head unit, and i got all the installation stuff i need, well at least i think, the wirering crap is what is pissin me off. i have bought 2 different wirering harnesses because i have no idea which one to use and they both look like neither will work. according to the packages they are both supposed to work. I have a 1998 mustang convertible. anyone install a headunit in a similar mustang, any help would be great, considering just takin it to best buy and having them do it cuz im just pissed

 

Yeah, they are a pain. I am in the process right now. According to the guy at an audio store in my area you should have two plugs for the stereo(mach 460 is what I have) and one bypass harness to go around the amps. I cant figure mine out cause I have two amps and only one harness and the harness doesn't fit both input and outputs on the amp. It just fits the input.

 

yeah i am not bad when it comes to car electronics, i did some crazy stuff in the truck i "owned" tear..... but this is blowing my mind, cuz i wish the wirering was just like, "here ya go heres one wirering harness and just plug it in and ur good to go" but of course it cant be. im thinkin about just bring my head unit into a best buy or something and payin them to do it, so i dont have to get mroe pissed

 

I know exactly what you guys are going through. I hated it. I just recently pulled mine out, wanted to just use the plugs, but that didn't happen. Best BUy, Circuit City, and a local shop all advised against it. I had 3 packages of plugs that I bought from Best Buy. One they said "should" beable to allow you to use the stock amp(s) and the other one is if that didn't work, then there was the "amp bypass" plug to go around the stock amps... Well they lie. There is NO way that they worked,.. nothing. Like you said, I also am pretty smart when it comes to radios and stuff.. But that was rediculous.. Long story short, I hacked up the wires, found the wires that go to the speakers.. (which by the way was horrible.. that was THE worst part..) Put my new head unit in, with out the amps, sounded like crap. Had to buy after market speakers... Just let me know if you have specific questions, I'll go look and see if I can help in any way..

Hey I have a ray of light for everyone. I talked to a guy at a audio store who knew what he was doing. He sold me the bypass elieminator kit last week. Today I took it in because the harnesses he sold me earlier didnt work. He had it hooked up in about five min. I am gonna carefully take a look and try to give some good advice for it and it does use the factory amps. I will post soon.l

 

Do you have the Mach 460, with two both amps? Just wondering?

This is bugging me... apparently I don't know how to install a head unit with a factory amp inside. I think I'm doing something wrong. I connected the headunit harness with the car and I get power in my CD player. I just don't get any sound, not even static. I checked if all the wires were spliced correctly and they are. I'm wondering if I am missing something... do I need another type of harness or something? I plug the Harness and the antenna into my headunit... is there anything else I need to plug into it?

I don't believe I have Mach 460... there isn't anything special indicated around the car at all. All I know is that I have 5 wires out of the back of my stock system. Two were right next to each other, black and square. on the very right... plugged in right next to those were a grey rectangle one. Another said "AMP" on it and slid over a thin piece of metal. The fourth was the antenna I believe. Do I need to bypass the amplifier? I will be installing subwoofers soon, so if I need to bypass it later I might as well do it now.

The Harness I got had a black square (8 socket) plug, and a grey rectangle plug. So I had one "AMP" cord, and one other black (6 socket) plug leftover.


I just want to know if this is correct or not so far, if it isn't let me know what I need to do. I feel like I need to do something besides the harness.

I'm thinking I'm going to take mine to best buy also...

yeh i got a 98 mustang gt convert w mach 460 i got all the speakers but the drivers side tweater to work with the wiring harnis i bought at walmart so i bought a bass blocker and ran it to my tweater and rewired that from my speaker directly to my head unit and it works just great...

 

id say go to Circuit City or something and find a guy who knows what the heck hes doing and ask him questions. Ask them a price to instal it for you, if its cheap, just let them do it
